Reporters and editors are expected to fact-check thoroughly before publication, and to re-read all their work after publication to catch any additional errors. Any staff member who notices an error must immediately notify the Managing Editor. Our readers are encouraged to submit errors by selecting “Correction” on the form at https://umassmedia.com/tips/.
When we’re wrong, we must say so as soon as possible. Once notified, the Managing Editor will investigate the validity of the claim and, in consultation with the Editor in Chief, issue a correction. A correction must always be labeled a correction. We do not use euphemisms such as “recasts,” “fixes,” “clarifies,” “minor edits” or “changes” when correcting a factual error.
We issue corrections only for factual errors, including misspelling of names and quotation errors. Minor typographical or grammatical errors in published articles may be fixed without acknowledgement.
We carry corrections wherever the error appeared. If an error appeared in print, online and on social media, we must post the correction in all three places. If an error was caught during the press run and did not appear in the online version of the article, the online article does not need to include a correction.
